Confraternity of Maria SS. of the Seven Sorrows - Diocese of Ragusa

Comiso - RG

The Confraternity of Maria SS. dei Sette Dolori was established inside the Prima Insigne Collegiate and Parish of the Basilica of Maria SS. Annunziata di Comiso, by virtue of the Apostolic Diploma issued in Rome by the Prior General of the Services on 10 June 1751.

The institution of the Confraternity of Maria dei Sette Dolori in the Basilica of Maria SS. Annunziata matured following the continuous exhortation of two great preachers, in order to satisfy popular devotion: Ven. Pier Luigi Lanuzza, promoter of religious piety (and whose relic with his cloak is kept in the basilica); and Father Pietro Palazzo, an imposing figure for his virtues and founder of the Congregation of the Oratory of S. Filippo Neri in Comiso. The Simulacrum of the Pietà, a papier-mâché work of 1751, made by prof. Sebastiano Alessi, is located in the chapel of the Passion of the Basilica of the Annunciation in Comiso. It is carried in procession on Good Friday by the Confraternity of Maria dei Sette Dolori.

Until the 1960s, the simulacrum was also carried in procession on 15 September, on the occasion of the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows.
