Lombardy ecclesiastical region

History

The ecclesiastical region of Lombardy currently includes ten dioceses: Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Crema, Cremona, Lodi, Mantua, Milan, Pavia, Vigevano. They are the "remnant" of a grandiose ancient metropolis: nineteen suffragan dioceses were present in the provincial council of Milan in 451. In addition to those indicated above: Albenga, Aosta, Asti, Brescello, Coira, Genoa, Ivrea, Novara, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Turin, Tortona, Vercelli. Although scaled down over the centuries, it is among the largest ecclesiastical regions of Italy and certainly the most populous and rich in structures and people. Leaving the individual dioceses their prospectus, it is worth noting that the ecclesiastical region extends over 22,699 km2, from Ticino to Lake Garda, from Valtellina to the Po, including the whole civil region and the impressive numbers shown on the previous page characterize marked differences the dioceses. They range from the diocese of Brescia, which has an area of 4538 km2 to just 276 in Crema. Brescia surpasses the same metropolitan area in terms of territory, Milan (4234 km2), but has a population five times smaller: 1,074,389, according to diocesan data from 2004, against 5,119,132 in Milan. On the other hand, Como, equal by extension to Milan, has a population ten times smaller than the metropolis and half that of Brescia, while the population of Pavia (161,562 inhabitants), three times larger than Crema, is not even twice as large as inhabitants of this. No minor discrepancies in the other figures: compare the number of parishes in the most populous diocese, Milan, with those of the largest one, Brescia: Milan has 1108, Brescia 469 and Bergamo, third for number of parishes, has 389, up to get to the 62 parishes of Crema. Brescia surpasses the same metropolitan area in terms of territory, Milan (4234 km2), but has a population five times smaller: 1,074,389, according to diocesan data from 2004, against 5,119,132 in Milan.
